ザ・日本の楽器 - Japanese music concert at my house [関西ローカルネタ* - KANSAI Local]

garden_back.jpgコンサート中は『写真、奇麗に撮ってね。』

At my family's Buddhism temple "Ichijo-ji temple" is located in Katsuragi, Nara. We held a traditional music concert inviting Shakuhachi performer from the city last week, as the ritual event to express our continuing gratitude to Danka (who has voluntary and long-term affiliation between our Buddhism temple). It was the second time for us to have this great event started since last year after my father has taken over the chief priest position of the temple from my grand-father.

My father aims to familiarize not only elderly people but also young people with the Buddhism temple by this invitation. It's not only for our Danka, anyone who wants to join the event has been welcomed.

Actually the performer is from the same city but he's American; Mr. Smith. Shakuhachi; a traditional instrument that he plays, why he started his carrier as a Shakuhachi performer is that he's attracted by the Shakuhachi's strong individuality. (→about Shakuhachi)

He said Shakuhachi is a kind of hard instrument, because of its simple design made from bamboo with 5 holes. To express the variation of sounds is hard-pressed to the performer, but on the other hand it's the point that he's attracted. Also Shakuhachi is very isolated, and the performer is also needed be isolated by following the characteristic of Shakuhachi history.

During the medieval period, shakuhachi were most notable for their role in the Fuke sect of Zen Buddhist monks, known as Komuso (emptiness monks) who used the shakuhachi as a spiritual tool. Their songs (called "honkyoku") were paced according to the players' breathing and were considered meditation as much as music. They used to play Shakuhachi in the temple. So he mentioned that the main hall of Japanese Buddhism temple is most suited to paly Shakuhachi.

In the event, his partner Mr. Izukawa; an electronic musician showed up as Komuso and played as the monks did in the ancient time.

Maybe because I grew up in the temple or I'm Japanese, the sound of Shakuhachi is a good inspirational sound for me and also good for meditation. The reason why people even from abroad has been attracted by its sound is because Shakuhachi is a very JAPANESE instrument. Both the performer and audiences can share the time for meditation during the performance.

He said the original plane atmosphere is good for Shakuhachi in the temple, but I'm thinking if I could take a chance to design the environment for Shakuhachi concert in our temple next year, because it's my house... I'm very busy but I'll try to take my inspirational training time for that.
